  • What is an emoji?View moreView less
  • An emoji is an ideogram or smiley used in an electronic message or on a Web page. emoji are used much like emoticons and exist in various genres, including facial expressions, common objects, places and types of weather, and animals.

  • How did “emoji” get its name?View moreView less
  • Originally meaning pictograph, the word emoji comes from Japanese language "picture" + "character" joined to create “e-moji” shortened to be recognised worldwide as ”emoji”.

The resemblance to the English words "emotion" and "emoticon" is purely coincidental

  • Where did emoji first appear?View moreView less
  • Originating on Japanese mobile phones in the late 1990s, emoji have become increasingly popular worldwide?

  • Who created emoji?View moreView less
  • The first emoji was created in 1998 or 1999 in Japan by Shigetaka Kurita, who was part of the team working on NTT DoCoMo's i-mode mobile Internet platform

  • How did emoji become so popular?View moreView less
  • In 1997, Nicolas Loufrani, recognized the growth in use of ASCII emoticons within mobile technology and he started experimenting with animated smiley faces, with the intention of creating colourful icons that corresponded to the pre-existing emoticons made of plain punctuation marks, to enhance them for a more interactive use in digital.

From this Loufrani created the first graphical emoticons and compiled an online "emoticon dictionary" that was sorted into separate categories:

    • Classics,
    • Moods,
    • Expressions,
    • Flags,
    • Celebrations,
    • Fun,
    • Sports,
    • Weather,
    • Animals,
    • Food,
    • Nations,
    • Occupations,
    • Planets,
    • Zodiac,
    • and Babies;

These designs were first registered in 1997 at The United States Copyright Office and then these icons were posted as .gif files on the Web in 1998, becoming the first graphical emoticons used in technology!

In 2000, the Emoticon Directory created by Loufrani was made available for users to download for cellular phones on the internet through smileydictionary.com which compiled over 1000 smiley graphic emoticons

But they weren't really fully embraced by the masses until 2012 when Apple released iOS 6. iPhone uses quickly learned that they could activate the emoji keyboard in iOS 6 to add fun little smileys and icons in their text messages. The emoji movement has since expanded to all sorts of social network sites too, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and others.

Emoji Cushions

It started with a kiss... literally! I was shopping around for ideas for my teenage daughter for her birthday and stumbled across these emoji cushions in China. It took me several attempts to get them delivered as they kept getting lost in international post. Once the emoji cushions arrived they were an instant hit, all her friends wanted one and so the craze in our house began.
